District seeks ODOT sidewalk grant to connect school to village; director credited for effort

Superintendent John Stott told the Berkshire Local Board that the district will meet this week with Ohio Department of Transportation officials to pursue a Safe Routes to Schools grant to install a sidewalk from the school to the village.
"The Ohio Department of Transportation will be coming in to work with us on...the goal of the project is for them to award us a grant to install a sidewalk from our building all the way down into the village," Stott said. He told the board that if the district is awarded the grant it would be "about a half million dollar grant." Stott credited Vanessa Carwin, identified in the meeting as the district's new director of community outreach and public relations, with spearheading the effort.
Board members reacted positively to the update and said they were excited about the potential for improved student walking access. Stott said the district will advertise any planned work sessions and public-comment opportunities in the Maple Leaf at least twice before a meeting so the public can participate.
No grant award or commitment of matching funds was approved at the meeting; the item was informational and board members asked staff to continue coordination with ODOT and report back if the grant is awarded or further action is needed.
