Berkshire Elementary students lead the Pledge in American Sign Language

John Stott, the district superintendent, introduced the presentation and turned the meeting over to Missus Gill, who led the fourth-grade students. Missus Gill said she was asked to bring the class together after discovering they had learned the pledge "in sign language," and that Missus Shaw serves as an ASL interpreter for one student. "I think it's really cool that all the classmates wanted to learn that to celebrate," she said.
The students stood together with pieces of a flag art project each had colored, which the teacher said helps emphasize community and belonging: "every student gets a piece of the flag ... are all part of our group." Board members thanked the students and extended holiday wishes to families following the presentation.
The presentation was scheduled as part of the board's agenda and preceded routine business. The board did not take action related to the presentation; it was noted as a community engagement item on the public agenda.
