The Marion Central School District superintendent reported multiple operational updates at the board meeting, including opening-day activities, transportation changes, regional collaboration outreach and technology upgrades.
Opening day and community engagement: The superintendent said opening day went well, with building principals preparing additional updates. The district had a booth at a recent fall festival and partnered with community schools to share resources.
Bus arrival/dismissal changes and safety: The superintendent reviewed a change that moved buses off Main Street and consolidated parent pickup on Main Street. Transportation staff observed improved traffic flow, reduced congestion and better student supervision. The district surveyed 21 participants involved in arrival/dismissal procedures; 16 respondents rated overall satisfaction as 4 or 5 on a 5-point scale. The superintendent noted adjustments to reduce safety risks for UPK arrival and dismissal and said additional communication and timing changes will be shared by building staff.
Regional collaboration and state planning: The superintendent reported outreach to three neighboring districts about program-sharing and potential consolidation discussions; at least one district expressed interest in further conversation. The district also flagged an upcoming state requirement: regionalization planning and a strengths-and-needs tool due in early November, to be coordinated with the BOCES region.
Technology and communications: Technology staff reported a July 1 migration to a new, mobile-optimized website integrated with ParentSquare and Google Calendar; replacement of wireless access points across district buildings (Meraki deployment); completion of data rollovers after summer school; and issuance of 250 Chromebooks as part of a routine refresh cycle. The tech update also noted an E-rate reimbursement that offset part of the wireless project costs.
The superintendent said many of the initial problems with the new bus configuration were addressed quickly and that the district will continue to monitor arrival/dismissal operations and solicit feedback.
Board members asked clarifying questions and some said they observed early kinks that were addressed by additional staffing and supervision.
