The Hastings-on-Hudson superintendent updated trustees on staffing and schedule changes at the high school, saying recent hires and internal moves will make departments whole and that the district is narrowing its Academic Intervention Services (AIS) model to serve students with intensive needs.
The superintendent said social studies will be a full-time replacement hire for a retiring teacher, math will be reorganized into a combined 0.5+0.5 (effectively 1.0) position with special-education certification, and English has a 0.6 position being filled by a strong internal candidate. "We are pleased that we've been able to work this out," the superintendent said, noting collaboration with department chairs and administrators.
On AIS, district staff clarified that the program will be a focused intervention for students needing tiered remediation rather than a general after‑school tutoring resource. "This is a very different type of after school... it's not a place to go to get that extra help that you missed after school," the superintendent said, while Melissa (administrator) explained that students are referred to the MTSS team for targeted interventions and, when appropriate, AIS will be placed in a student's schedule.
Trustees raised scheduling questions, including concerns from parents about students having two or three study halls a week and whether the master schedule could better balance core subjects and electives. Several trustees asked for ongoing tracking of new hires and program outcomes; one trustee requested regular check-ins to measure whether positions are meeting intended goals.
The board directed staff to provide clearer data and to consider master-schedule options and potential asynchronous or online course supervision where staffing allows. The trustees did not take formal action on staffing at this meeting; the recommended budget and hiring proposals will return on the board agenda for future votes as required.
