Board accepts building-level safety plans after reviewing recent lockdown

Board members reviewed and approved building-level safety plans for 2024-25 after a staff recap of a recent lockdown incident.

A staff member (speaker 5) told the board the district issued more than six communications to the community from initial notification through the end of the incident. "From the time that we got notified to the time that this whole thing was over, we got out over 6 communications to the community," the staff member said, adding that communications included messages to staff and families and that the district also sent a summary to staff and the community.

The staff member said police reported that a person with a rifle had been seen behind Granville Elementary School, prompting a lockdown. Later, after investigation, the object was determined to be a pellet rifle held by an adolescent. The staff member described on-site observations: "When those lockdown situations were called... it was a shirtless adolescent in pajama pants with a rifle." The staff member said the incident was among the most serious the district has faced in recent years and that the district will review response procedures to identify improvements, including follow-up conversations with building principals.

Board members asked whether anything could have been handled differently and asked for a summary of the incident and any lessons learned. Staff reported that about five or six students left Granville Elementary School and around 20 left the junior/senior high after the event, numbers the staff member said may not be exact. The staff member said the district is working to increase family survey responses (70 so far, target about 250) to inform improvements.

The board voted to accept the building-level safety plans; discussion emphasized communication tweaks and further debriefs at the building level. No changes to district lockdown policy were announced at the meeting.
