Junior/Senior High report: disciplinary referrals steady, vaping incidents rising

Junior/Senior High administrators reported to trustees that disciplinary referrals were similar to last year (about 664 year-to-date), suspensions had declined (from 35 to 22) and a small group of students accounted for a disproportionate share of referrals. Administrators also reported a notable increase in vaping and tobacco-related confiscations.
"We actually have 25 nicotine vapes, 11 THC oil vapes, 4 bags of marijuana ... 49 items overall," said the school administrator (S11), summarizing items confiscated in the school year and urging parents to monitor possessions. The administrators said they had posted for an additional hall monitor and plan restroom-stall renovations in a future capital project to curb in-bathroom use.
Building and district staff described ongoing training for teacher assistants and a district-wide behavior program called PRIDE (Physical safety, Respect, Inclusion, Determination and Emotional health) to align expectations across buildings.
What happens next: hire an additional hall monitor, proceed with targeted training for aides, continue restorative and behavioral supports, and include restroom renovation scope in future capital planning as mitigation for in-bathroom vaping.
