A district curriculum presenter outlined the initiative's six attributes (academically prepared; creative innovators; critical thinkers; effective communicators; global citizens; reflective and future-focused) and said the Portrait is designed to add multiple demonstrations of proficiency (capstone projects, portfolios and workplace learning) to the existing diploma pathways rather than replace traditional assessments. The presenter said the Portrait was adopted in July and that the district joined an early cohort (one of 13 districts) to begin planning and professional development.
The presenter said the district expects to align fully with state guidance for the cohort entering in fall 2027; that class (often referred to in the transcript as the graduating class of 2031) will demonstrate Portrait attributes alongside current requirements during the transition. Board members asked about the impact on AP and other advanced courses; the presenter and other board members said they do not expect a reduction in rigor and stressed the need for conversations about defining rigorous learning as the district develops rubrics and professional development.
District staff said they will work with BOCES and the Modern Learners cohort to train teacher leaders and provide professional development for project-based and proficiency-based pathways as state guidance becomes available.
