Fredonia board outlines three-year strategic plan focusing on literacy, interventions and facilities stewardship

Doctor Zilliox described a process of community SWOT analysis, targeted surveys (about 300 responses for the planning survey), and committee synthesis that distilled priorities into three pillars: curriculum and learning, support and accountability, and facilities and stewardship. ‘‘We’re beginning with the end in mind,’’ Zilliox said, describing year‑1 work as ‘‘seek to understand’’ — pilots and fact-finding, followed by benchmarks and action steps in years 2 and 3.
The committee highlighted literacy and curriculum review, intervention supports, Leader in Me/soft-skills work, mental‑health/SEL initiatives, community partnerships, communication improvements, and equity efforts as candidate focus areas. School and community volunteers, staff, and board members processed qualitative feedback and identified the items to pilot during the coming academic year.
Board members said they valued the collaborative approach and the emphasis on a limited number of focus areas so the district can show measurable progress. Staff will return with more detailed year‑1 action steps and metrics as the committee moves from analysis to implementation.
What’s next: District will pilot selected reading interventions this year, evaluate outcomes, and identify benchmarks for years 2 and 3 of the plan.
