Board members also approved Title IV funds, which the staff described as supporting nurse assistants, social workers, software and back-to-school supplies. The board approved participation in the Indian Education Act initiative to support indigenous education and native-language instruction, and it acknowledged a literacy grant award for grades six through eight; the literacy award letter had not yet been received, so the dollar amount was not specified and cannot yet be budgeted.
The board approved the Perkins CTE grant to support programs including culinary arts, nursing and agricultural shops, noting new tools purchased with the grant will expand hands-on opportunities.
The board recorded approval of an Innovation Zone grant discussed as roughly $78,000, which staff said will help fund student internships and a vehicle for transporting students to off-site work experiences. "This will be the second year we've got this grant...they can literally buy a new suburban to haul the kids back and forth," a speaker said during the meeting.
A staff presenter described the Impact Aid Formula Grant from the U.S. Department of Education as being based on Native American student enrollment and stated the amount is about $7,072,000. The board recommended using those funds for liaison and salary-related supports. The figure was presented in the meeting as an estimate; exact award documentation was discussed as the basis for final budgeting.
Several routine procedural motions were also handled on the consent/regular agenda, including approval of minutes and the check register and a blanket approval process for some large 2024–25 purchases so staff can act on urgent items and report back to the board.
Next steps: staff will incorporate the awarded grants into the district’s budgeting process once final award memos are received and will report back with specific budget allocations as required.
