Dexter board sets Nov. 18 deadline for applicants to fill vacancy, approves routine business and budget items

The Dexter Consolidated Schools Board held routine business on Nov. 11, approving its agenda, prior meeting minutes and October bills and payroll by voice vote and discussing a slate of first readings on policy advisories.
Chair called for the meeting’s consent actions and obtained voice approval to adopt the agenda and to approve the Oct. 14 meeting minutes. Later in the meeting, the board approved October bills and payroll.
On finance, district staff outlined several budget adjustments and transfers. They noted annual payments in lieu of taxes (PILT) from local solar facilities (historically about $4,000; a new county check of $5,900 was reported), a final Title I allocation of $97,000, intrafund transfers to account for kitchen equipment purchases, and a $147,000 Ed Fellows grant that will fund short-term educational-assistance positions for the remainder of the fiscal year.
The board conducted first readings on multiple policy advisories that will return for further consideration at a later meeting. Items reviewed included policies covering disposition of school facilities to charter schools; equal employment opportunity (230 GBA); a teacher residency program (231 GCIA) (flagged for further discussion with Superintendent Graves for wording that might bind the district); retiree return-to-work provisions; nondiscrimination related to reproductive and gender-affirming health care (233 ACB); a Human Rights Act protection for gender identity (234); school board elections and a corresponding holiday; food services regulations (236); adult fees; and open enrollment (237).
On governance, the board addressed a recent resignation and options for filling the vacancy. The board agreed to accept letters of interest from district residents with a closing date of Nov. 18 and to schedule an executive session to review applications and to plan interviews before making an appointment to serve until the next election. Chair clarified that applicants must reside in the district and explained submission procedures via the district email listed on the website.
Personnel items announced at the meeting included new hires: Steven Hans as middle school boys basketball coach, Ruben Ruiz as high school head baseball coach, and Anthony Maureen as assistant varsity boys basketball coach. The board reported no resignations at this meeting.
The board also shared community notices: a Thanksgiving lunch on Nov. 15 with student lunch periods (elementary 11:00–12:00; middle 11:20–11:50; high school 12:45–1:20); students eat free, and nonstudent plates are $10; and the district will be closed for Thanksgiving.
