RSU 14 board approves first read of generative AI policy

The RSU 14 Board approved the first revised reading of policy IAI, "RSU 14 use of generative artificial intelligence," at its Dec. 18 meeting.
Chair (speaker 1) summarized the policy committee's process: the committee used Drummond Woodson procedural guidance, consulted library-media specialists, tech integrators and the technology director for approximately six hours of review, and incorporated perspectives from professional development and district training. The policy is intended to establish board-level guidance while leaving procedural detail to administration.
The committee emphasized that, because most generative-AI tools currently lack student-privacy agreements, the policy at present outlines rules for staff use and requires staff to follow existing board policies when integrating these tools into instruction. "This policy only references guidelines for staff at this time," the Chair said, adding that the administration will develop the procedures for implementation.
The motion for the first revised read was moved and seconded and carried on roll-call vote. Administration will return with procedures and implementation steps for board review and make further recommendations as needed.
The board recorded no substantive amendments to the policy during the first read and directed administration to proceed with procedural development.
