Milton-Freewater superintendent reports CLEP wins, safety drills and enrollment uptick

Duff said 19 of the district’s high-school students “passed their CLEP test at Eastern Oregon University this quarter,” and that “together, they earned 228 college credits, which translates to over $60,000 in savings for their future college tuition.” The district presented the CLEP results as evidence of student proficiency in additional languages and as part of broader efforts to strengthen language arts programming.
Safety measures were a central point of his update. “Safety is our top priority for us,” Duff said, and he reported that every school in the district participated in emergency drills this quarter. He thanked “our partners at the Milton-Freewater Police Department and Umatilla County Sheriff’s Department” for coordinating the exercises and commended staff and students for their readiness.
Duff also highlighted student engagement in extracurriculars: “Over one-third of our high school students and about the same at our middle school are involved in fall sports and other activities,” he said, urging families and community members to attend events that support students.
Looking ahead, Duff said the district will partner with youth sports and activity programs to provide facilities through winter to expand opportunities. He described MAPS testing as a tool the district is using to track individual student growth and set personalized goals as part of a student-centered strategic plan.
On enrollment, Duff said the district has welcomed new students and attributed the increase to staff efforts and educational opportunities, calling it “a great time to be part of the Milton Freewater School District.” He closed by thanking families and staff and wishing the community a successful second quarter.
