Lebanon Community SD 9 board reviews community engagement proposal

Jen, a board member, presented what she called a proposal or “idea dump” developed with communications director Michelle outlining possible ways to increase community engagement, including listening sessions, targeted presentations and use of on-site survey tools.

“The board, is interested in getting community feedback, being engaged in the community,” Jen said, asking if the board thought the plan was “headed in the right direction.” Several board members responded that the overview hit important steps toward improving outreach.

Jen cautioned about survey quality and said she was exploring vendors to ensure research-grade responses rather than ad hoc questionnaires. “Surveys are only as good as they are,” she said, noting past community surveys had lower participation unless paired with events or active outreach.

Board members discussed listening-session logistics and expressed interest in learning from Albany’s experience to ensure sessions are structured and useful. Members suggested using QR codes or on-the-spot surveys during events to raise response rates and recommended clearer scheduling and promotion to maximize participation.

The board signaled consensus to proceed with the engagement plan. Jen said she will build presentations for different audiences, begin scheduling sessions (some to start in September) and keep the board updated on progress.

Next steps: staff will refine survey options, return with implementation details and schedule community events; the district will also explore livestreaming or observer options so absent board members can follow sessions without participating.
