District official says mediation has moved forward but class size, prep time and specialist pay remain unresolved
Summary
An agency official for Greater Albany Public SD 8J said mediation produced two full offers and that Article 38 (health and safety) was signed; outstanding bargaining items include class-size definitions, a $1.5 million class-size fund request, prep-time scheduling, counting of professional development time and a $300,000 specialist-pay request. The district will continue meal service and update families before conference days.
An agency official for Greater Albany Public SD 8J told the district community on Monday that mediation over the ongoing teacher work stoppage has produced two complete offers in the last three days, and that parties signed off on Article 38, which addresses health and safety.
"The district has presented 2 complete deal offers in the last 3 days of mediation," the official said, adding that "Article 38, which was related to health and safety, was signed off on last night." The official framed that as an important step and said the district hopes to build on the agreement in the coming days.
Why it matters: the work stoppage has disrupted families and school operations, and unresolved bargaining points will determine both staffing and budget choices going into the next school year. The district said it will continue feeding students at school sites and drop points for as long as the strike continues.
