Sponsor Wyatt McPhee (S30) said many students have short or rushed lunches because of travel time, long cafeteria lines and short schedules; he argued 35 minutes is a reasonable minimum that can be implemented flexibly by districts. “Lunch is the most important meal of the day for our students' mental and physical health,” he said in closing remarks (Wyatt McPhee, S30).
Supporters described large campuses where walking to off-campus lunch options can consume a significant portion of time; opponents noted the change could require adjustments to class schedules or school days but said individual districts could implement the time differently. After debate the chamber voted unanimously in favor; the memorial passed.
