Chair advances first reading of new 6–12 science curriculum and approves cyber-learning expansion

"This is the first reading of the attached curriculum document developed by the 6 through 12 science teachers and administrators in McGuffey School District," the presiding officer said, noting the materials will be made available to the public via a provided link and that the board will vote on adoption at the next meeting. The board also moved to approve core and supplemental resources for grades 6–8 and for high-school courses including chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, physical science, forensic science and anatomy at an estimated cost of $170,135.74 to be paid from 2024–25 budgeted district funds.
Board members were given time to review the presentation materials and the presiding officer said the public had the same opportunity to examine the documents prior to the meeting. When members asked about the planned curriculum review cycle, the presiding officer and others noted conflicting background information: "I thought the cycle was 5 years," one member said, while the background information referenced six years. The presiding officer said staff (not present) would be asked to verify and report back with a definitive answer.
Separately, the board approved a motion to expand the existing agreement with Lincoln Learning Solutions to broaden access to Lincoln Learning courses for grades 6–12 McGuffey cyber learning students. Members asked brief clarifying questions about pricing and technical delivery (one member referenced the district's "mix fiber"), and the presiding officer confirmed the price was different from prior terms.
After completing those votes, the presiding officer requested a motion to enter executive session for reasons of personnel and possible litigation; the board approved the motion and entered executive session at 7:01 p.m.
The curriculum materials will remain publicly available online and the board scheduled a formal adoption vote at the next meeting. Details the board said it will confirm include the curriculum-review cycle length and any final budget adjustments tied to the resource purchase.
