Kiski Area SD honors bus driver who evacuated students after Oct. 24 crash

The Kiski Area School District board on Wednesday presented a certificate of appreciation to a Smith Bus employee, Miss Frederick, whose actions during an Oct. 24 bus accident helped evacuate roughly 20 students without serious injury.
The district superintendent, Dr. Laura, told the board she saw smoke and that staff and first responders "jumped into action," but singled out Miss Frederick for quickly steering the bus to safety and moving students away from danger. "Her actions on that morning were absolutely beyond professional," Dr. Laura said.
Dr. Roland presented the certificate and said the driver "kept the 20 students on her bus at the first part of her mind and kept them safe," calling it a response that likely prevented more serious injuries. Board members and administrators thanked the bus company, school staff and first responders for their coordinated response, and several directors echoed appreciation in closing comments.
School officials noted Miss Frederick completed her afternoon run that day and returned to work the next day; administrators rode the bus the following day to check on procedures and comfort students. The district said the driver is an employee of Smith Bus and that the event reinforced the district's relationship with first responders.
The board took no formal policy action based on the incident and moved on to routine agenda business at the same meeting.
