Senate reads resolution honoring Alice Marie Johnson; Johnson urges second chances

The Mississippi Senate read Senate Resolution No. 28 recognizing Alice Marie Johnson of Olive Branch for her appointment to a White House role reviewing clemency petitions and supporting people transitioning from prison. The resolution text noted Johnson’s commutation and later pardon and described her post-release advocacy work.

Johnson, introduced to the chamber and invited to speak, recounted her background and work in prison law and advocacy. She said her efforts included helping people file motions and win sentence reductions and described taking more than 100 cases to the president and helping “46 individuals get a second chance in life.” She told senators she remains “very proud today to be back in my home state of Mississippi,” and urged lawmakers to remember the families affected by incarceration: “When one person goes to prison, their entire family goes with them.”

Representative Remack, speaking on behalf of the Mississippi House, presented a separate recognition and described Johnson’s life as “a testimony to the power of redemption.” A short video honoring Johnson was requested and played for the chamber.
