Board to advertise vacancy after resignation; staff to check appointment law

The Lake Park Audubon School District board discussed how to fill a recent board vacancy after the resignation of Becky Metro.
Staff (Speaker 4) said Metro resigned effective Friday and described the district’s usual approach: post the vacancy on the district website and social media, accept brief emailed statements of intent and review applications; the board typically gives two weeks for applicants and then vets candidates before making an appointment. Staff also said a law that took effect last year may allow appointment to fill the remainder of a term when a member resigns before the second year of their term, and committed to verifying that guidance with the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) and the district attorney.
Board members discussed outreach to recruit applicants, including social media, the district website and local radio, and the value of describing time commitments and expectations to prospective candidates. Staff said the application process would be simple (an email with intent and a short summary) and that staff could call prospective local candidates to gauge interest.
Staff said they would post the notice, accept applications and report back with any legal clarification about appointment length. The board did not fill the seat at the meeting.
