Administrators described the district’s practice of leasing vehicles to allow more frequent rotation into newer models; the lease includes a nominal buyout ($1) at the end of the term so the district takes ownership after three years. Transportation staff said high-top, all-wheel-drive Transit vans meeting state weight-class requirements are difficult to find and tend to sell quickly.
The superintendent explained the intended use: the van will primarily serve general education activities and occasionally special-education transports if needed. Board discussion centered on age, mileage and whether a newer 2025 model at a lower price made the recommended bid preferable; staff confirmed the recommended vehicle met all safety and specification requirements.
A voice vote approved staff recommendation; the chair announced, "Ayes have it." The vendor and final paperwork will be completed by administration per the board-approved bid.
Next steps: Transportation staff will complete lease paperwork, trade in the district’s paid-off Tahoe (as described in the report), and integrate the new van into the vehicle rotation schedule.
