Roosevelt teacher Breanne Isaacson explained an "intentional" instructional approach that uses benchmarks, FAST assessments and frequent conferring to guide reading instruction. Isaacson said her class increased the number of students reading at grade level from five to 15 this year and brought two students — Camilla and Latavius — to demonstrate growth. "The word intentional is the word that I came up with to use throughout this whole presentation," Isaacson said as she outlined planning, scaffolding and data checks that shaped instruction.
At Jefferson Elementary, Principal Nick Jerns and staff described a new 'student-of-the-month' breakfast that invites students and a parent or guardian and is supported by local businesses (Hy-Vee, Walmart, Kwik Trip). Jerns and his team also recognized several staff members based on peer and student feedback and highlighted newcomer-family outreach by staff member Jessica Velasquez, who was praised for helping families enroll students and connect them to housing and clothing resources.
Why it matters: The presentations spotlight district classroom practices, local business support for family engagement and teacher strategies that administrators and board members said exemplify district goals for student achievement and community involvement.
The board offered thanks and did not take separate votes on the presentations.
