Bond projects near completion at Central, Haverhill and Woodland, district says

Portage Public Schools staff updated trustees on progress under the district's bond program, saying multiple projects are entering finishing stages with final walk‑throughs set for late April and early May.
Johnny Edwards, the board's bond project presenter, said Central Elementary will receive student cubbies, marker boards, windows and blinds, and that furniture delivery for Central begins Monday, April 21, with a final staff construction walk‑through scheduled for May 5. He said similar work is underway at Haverhill, where fixtures and teaching walls are being installed and furniture delivery is expected to start May 8, with a second walk‑through the same day.
Edwards described site work at Central: crews demoed the existing entrance, installed storm structures and piping to mitigate summer traffic during construction, and will replace an existing parking lot. "We have a pinch point for us as we roll into our August kickoff," he said, noting the district is working with contractors to stage demolition and parking work simultaneously and that demolition crews have roughly 10 days to remove the building with financial penalties or credits tied to meeting the timeline.
Trustees asked about interior finishes and the presenter supplied detail on gym floors, gym hoops, sound panels and library murals. Edwards said elevator installation, drywall, painting and cabinetry are in progress across projects.
The district also reported three new vans purchased for transportation and previewed a virtual‑reality QR code used at Woodland Family Night to let families preview school renderings. Trustees voiced support and appreciation for the work and the district's contractor coordination.
The board took no separate action on the construction update; staff said they will add photos to the file and answer any additional trustee questions.
