Summary
Superintendent Dr. Jaren Frieda used a monthly district update at Cattell High School to praise counseling staff, celebrate Black History Month and Lunar New Year, tout the campus' first regional esports tournament and spotlight CTE programming including the culinary program.
Dr. Jaren Frieda, superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District, visited Cattell High School for the district's monthly update, thanking staff, students and families and outlining recent campus activities and upcoming events. "When students feel understood and supported, learning and growth follow," Frieda said, underscoring the district's emphasis on relationships as the foundation for student success.
Frieda said February's calendar centered on connection, culture, student voice and opportunity. The district recognized School Counseling Week to honor counselors and support staff "who show up for students every day, academically, emotionally, and personally." Frieda pointed to a local Connection Before Correction event at Cattell as an example of efforts to prioritize support and belonging over punitive responses.
Frieda highlighted cultural celebrations across the district — including Black History Month, Lunar New Year and Tet events — saying such programs help students "see themselves reflected in their schools" and build cultural pride. The superintendent also noted Cattell's role in expanding opportunities, reporting that the campus recently hosted the district's first regional esports tournament at the Royal Crown Theater and framed competitive gaming as a pathway to college and careers through teamwork and strategy.
Looking ahead, Frieda announced upcoming campus programming including Cattell Talks and a screening of the district film "Dusty." He also praised students' achievements in arts, athletics and academics and called attention to career technical education (CTE) offerings, including the culinary program, as part of efforts to prepare students for postgraduation careers.
Frieda thanked staff recognized for years of service, noted family participation in Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) discussions and acknowledged community partners who support the schools. He said Cattell students were recently recognized at an Anaheim City Council meeting and were personally thanked by the mayor for their contributions to the community.
The update closed with Frieda inviting families and staff to upcoming events on district campuses. No formal actions, votes, or policy changes were announced during the address.
