Council amends sign code to give more flexibility for wall signage

Council approved a text amendment to the city's sign code to allow wall signage on building faces that do not have direct street frontage or a public entrance, a change staff said will reduce the number of businesses required to seek sign-review-board variances.
Corey (planning staff) said the amendment grew from repeated requests from businesses seeking signage on faces that, while not technically fronting a public street, are nevertheless visible and common-sense locations for signage (for example a public-access drive or large commercial parking area). Removing the sentence that tied wall-sign eligibility to street frontage or a public entrance would give staff more flexibility and reduce administrative appeals to the sign-review board.
Councilmembers framed the change as business-friendly. Councilmember Rodriguez (speaker 3) said the text amendment would ease the process for businesses and cited the Jake's example earlier in the meeting. The council voted 7-0 to adopt Ordinance 3919.
Next steps: the amended code will take effect per standard ordinance timelines and staff said they will return later this year with a more comprehensive sign-code review.
