Commissioners align cyber renewal to May cycle and flag Sunny Meadows insurance challenges

County insurance advisors reviewed cyber insurance options and renewal timing with commissioners. The broker recommended maintaining Travelers coverage with a $2 million limit and a $25,000 retention and offered proactive services such as penetration testing and tabletop incident response.

Commissioners approved shifting the policy to May renewal dates for cycle alignment, accepting an extended transaction term quoted at roughly $28,541 so future renewals coincide with other county coverages.

The insurance presenter also reviewed workers' compensation trends, reporting roughly $19,000 in total claims for calendar year 2024 (29 claims) and noting improvements in incident reporting and safety culture that should lower the county's experience modification next year.

Staff raised concern about insurance for Sunny Meadows, the county home: carriers have flagged the facility's lack of licensed medical staff and the building's suitability for state licensure. Insurers declined or required additional underwriting—staff reported approaching more than 20 specialty carriers last year—but the county secured limited professional coverage for the facility; the professional component was discussed at about $30,000 in recent renewals. Commissioners asked staff to continue working with brokers and carriers and to provide renewal updates.
