The commissioner said the facility faces a hard deadline: if adequate liability insurance is not secured by May 10 the facility will have to close. "We will not allow a building or facility to operate without insurance," the commissioner said. The presenter said staff and insurance trustees are actively searching for coverage but noted the difficulties last year when national carriers declined and specialty insurers resisted; the speaker said Sunny Meadows experienced about a 189% turnover in staffing last year, which compounds liability and operational risk.
Commissioners discussed that staffing shortfalls pose risks even if insurance is obtained because inadequate staffing increases liability exposure. The board agreed to formally record the committee's creation and to coordinate with the county council on representation and funding for any options the committee develops.
Next steps: the committee will convene, include council representation, and return recommendations for operations, staffing and funding; commissioners said May 10 is the operational deadline if insurance is not found.
