County ratifies coroner services agreement, approves higher-duty pay and clears emergency permit for autopsy lab

Kootenai County commissioners ratified a professional services agreement for coroner services and approved higher-duty pay Feb. 24 as the county brings an autopsy lab online.
County staff said the coroner's office already used contracted services and conducted its first autopsy Thursday. A coroner office official (S9) said the office is also signing agreements with two additional medical examiners and that using existing staff as autopsy assistants will save the county money compared with hiring a new full-time employee. "Thursday morning was our first autopsy and it went smoothly," the coroner office official said.
To reflect the additional responsibilities, the board approved retroactive higher-duty pay of $1.25 per hour, effective Feb. 19. The commissioner motion to approve the retroactive pay passed by voice vote.
Separately the board approved adding an emergency agenda item to advance a City of Coeur d'Alene building permit for the coroner's lab into next week's payables; the permit amount read into the record was $17,629.63. County staff said the timing to get a check cut necessitated the emergency addition so construction would not be delayed.
Next steps: the coroner's office will finalize contracts with additional medical examiners and proceed with the autopsy lab schedule; the building permit payment will appear in next week's payables.
