The Colorado Senate adopted Senate Joint Resolution 014 on Feb. 27, 2026, declaring Feb. 28, 2026, Rare Disease Day in Colorado to raise awareness about rare diseases and support affected individuals and families. The resolution, sponsored by Senators Kipp and Simpson and representatives Garcia and Johnson, noted estimates that roughly 1 in 10 Coloradans live with a rare disease and highlighted the financial and care challenges many families face.
Minority Leader Simpson spoke personally about his mother's death from ALS and said he wore a zebra shirt in recognition of Rare Disease Day, asking colleagues to join and meet with visitors from advocacy groups who were in the gallery. The Senate adopted the resolution by voice/roll; the clerk recorded a vote of 31 ayes and the resolution was adopted and cosponsors were added by unanimous consent.
Copies of the resolution will be sent to the Colorado Rare Disease Advisory Council.
