Public works: 70th Street closure for water‑main, new treatment plant planned by 2028

Gary, the public works representative, told the commission contractors plan a full closure of 70th Street at Eidson from July 28 through Aug. 8 to install a water main and casing pipe; traffic will be detoured via Hinton (65th) to Inwood. Gary said park access will remain available from the north to the south during that work.

Gary provided additional project updates: phase 3 kerb removal and topsoil placement for pavement management are underway, Granada Park's bump‑out is open pending striping, and the in‑house thin overlay will begin soon on Lehi between 100th Street and 95th Street. He said the mill and overlay concrete work is complete at the cited locations.

Council member David Claussen, who introduced himself as a new council member, said the new water treatment plant (to be located behind the central fire station) has begun clearing and is expected to be operational in mid‑2028; Gary said the plant and connecting main will be the city's largest public‑works project to date and will take several years.

Gary also described 80th Street boring work that will place pits on either side of the bore and explained that a 70th Street open cut was required due to rock under the roadway.

Staff directed residents to a construction website with weekly updates and praised social‑media maps for detour clarity. No formal votes or budget approvals were taken at this meeting on these projects.
