Library director reports rising attendance, board favors short, branching accessibility survey

The Library Director (S3) reported increases across circulation, e-resources, program attendance and outreach, saying program attendance and outreach were "almost double" compared with the previous year.
Board members discussed a draft "happiness" or accessibility survey intended to capture what patrons want and what barriers they face. The director presented two sample surveys — one long and one short — and asked whether the board preferred a concise instrument that could branch to more detailed follow-ups depending on answers.
Board members generally supported a shorter survey, with one member noting a cap of about 10 questions to avoid survey fatigue. Members suggested an initial screening question to route respondents into different question sets for library customers versus noncustomers. The director agreed to begin a framework, invite emailed suggestions and circulate draft questions; she noted that board members may not "reply all" to those emails because of the Texas Open Meetings Act.
The director also described staff work to increase outreach, new-member signups and program variety and said the library has begun issuing enhanced cards ("quasi government ID" cards) and is exploring ways to promote them. The board did not take a final vote on the survey; the director will bring a draft to a future meeting.
