Recreation Superintendent Jonathan Hanson told the Parks and Recreation Commission that recent events and projects show strong community engagement and significant construction progress across the department’s capital program.
Hanson reported festival metrics and program updates: “we sold 5,170 tickets over the entire weekend, which is, 28% increase from last year,” he said, and added that the event hosted 66 vendors (an 84% increase). Staff plan an after-action review to capture lessons learned for next year’s 50th Deutschenfest.
Capital projects and timelines: Staff announced Murchison Park is scheduled for completion next month after trail expansion, revegetation and the installation of a new playground and pavilion furnishings. The 1849 Park Phase 1B — parking, a football field with lighting and trails — is substantially complete; Phase 2 grading has advanced quickly, with seeding or sodding expected in the coming weeks and a broader completion window of December into January 2026.
Kelly Lane Park construction has begun, with three new pickleball courts, additional trails, a shaded playground, prefab restroom facilities and site furnishings scheduled to follow. Hanson also reported progress at the Monarch Recreation Center: tilt walls and underground aquatics infrastructure are in place for the 140,000-square-foot facility; staff said building completion is targeted for the fall but an official opening date will be set later to allow staffing and programming preparations.
Planning and strategic work: Staff described an RFQ and upcoming design-phase process for 'destination play,' a multi-generational play space tied to downtown; the design phase is expected to take about 12 months once the design team is selected. An athletic field feasibility study is wrapping up and will guide future bond and site decisions; a trail wayfinding and park signage plan with the department’s landscape architect is also underway. Hanson said the department is developing an internal strategic 'credo' to guide operations and culture.
Commission feedback and next steps: Commissioners asked operational questions about programming and design; staff invited continued feedback and signaled that many items will return for formal approvals as designs and procurement advance.
