Summary
City Manager Peter Zanoni told council the Texas General Land Office awarded the city a $6.5 million grant to renourish about 3,500 feet of North Beach shoreline from Surfside Park toward the USS Lexington; the GLO will manage the project and the city will coordinate scheduling to minimize tourism impacts.
City Manager Peter Zanoni announced that staff received final notice that the Texas General Land Office awarded the full $6.5 million requested for an expedited North Beach renourishment project. The grant will support beach renourishment to address long‑term erosion across roughly 3,500 feet of shoreline from Surfside Park down to the USS Lexington.
Zanoni said the General Land Office (GLO) will lead and manage the construction contract; city staff will serve a coordinating role to protect tourism and minimize disruption to residents. He said city parks staff led the application and that staff will work with neighborhood groups and local businesses on scheduling and public notifications. The announcement came during the city manager’s report before council’s lengthy public comment period on water supply items.
Work is expected to begin once the GLO finalizes project scoping and scheduling; the city will provide updates on timelines and traffic/parking impacts during the permit and procurement phases.
