Recreation superintendent reviews busy summer: camps, aquatics and volunteer efforts

He said the department ran nine weeks of summer camp with roughly 28 camp staff and high enrollment (about 93% capacity). Aquatics staffing included more than 100 lifeguards and instructors across facilities, and staff said learn-to-swim opportunities were expanded this year with more than 2,000 sessions offered. The department also promoted internal leadership by elevating six managers from existing staff.
Jonathan summarized public events and attendance: Music in the Park drew about 300 people, the Juneteenth Rock the Block saw about 500 attendees, and Rock the Block in July and August drew large crowds as well. Staff also reported volunteer engagement: 67 adults and 37 youth volunteered this summer, contributing hundreds of hours and removing about 271 bags of trash weighing nearly 5,500 pounds.
On program innovation, Jonathan noted new recreation-center offerings (power yoga, youth basketball skills training, baton twirling and youth volleyball) and said some classes are planned to expand if demand warrants. He also recounted lighter moments of summer programming and promotional ideas for fall events.
What happens next: staff will finalize fall programming, confirm event dates (including the cardboard regatta) and continue to refine volunteer and aquatics offerings.
