Commission approves 'Daydreams in Bloom' mural, plans community paint day

The Pflugerville Parks & Recreation Commission voted to approve the commissioning of a second-phase mural titled "Daydreams in Bloom" for the Gilleland Creek West Trail embankment at Grand Avenue Parkway.
Staff said the mural, designed by Ernesto Hernandez and Cindy Tobar, would be immediately north of the existing "Flight of the Pollinator Plains" installation and use UV-protective and anti-graffiti coatings. Staff estimated the embankment to be approximately 11 feet high and 50 feet long.
Artist Cindy Tobar, who introduced herself to the commission, described the piece as "a visual poem of color and light" and emphasized community participation in the work. Staff raised the possibility of a community paint day to allow residents to contribute base layers on a tentative date of Nov. 8; Tobar said the volunteer paint day would focus on simpler layers while the artists complete the more detailed work.
Commissioners asked about logistics (parking and shuttles) and how the new mural would interface with the existing artwork; staff said the murals would be designed to blend visually while retaining distinct elements. A motion to approve the project was made and seconded, commissioners voted "aye," and the motion carried.
What happens next: staff will finalize logistics for the community paint day and proceed with arrangements and coatings specified in the presentation.
