North Richland Hills authorizes 1-year extension with Republic Services with 4% increase

The North Richland Hills City Council authorized the city manager to execute a second and final one-year amendment with Republic Services of Texas to extend the city's solid-waste and recycling contract through Jan. 31, 2029.
Trudy (staff) outlined the contract services: twice-weekly residential pickup, weekly brush collection, weekly curbside recycling, annual CPI-based adjustments (Urban Consumers index for garbage/trash, with a contract maximum of 5%), landfill drop-off for residents, and certain services for city facilities. For the upcoming year, Republic offered a 4% increase based on the CPI formula; staff recommended executing the amendment to accept the 4% increase rather than the contract maximum of 5%.
A Republic representative, Andy (speaker 15), attended to answer questions; he confirmed the company is moving toward increased monitoring tools and said some monitoring/charging options could be introduced in the future. "The idea of that, yes...that's definitely coming down the pipeline as we're able to introduce more things like that," Andy said regarding monitoring for improper items in trash loads.
Council members moved and seconded the authorization; the council approved the amendment 7-0. Staff said the extension is the second and final one-year option provided in the original five-year contract that began Feb. 1, 2022.
