Taxpayers ask how appeals, TURC cases and homestead filings affect assessments and relief
Summary
At the Hall County hearing residents pressed the board on whether ongoing TURC appeals block county action, how and when to file for homestead exemption, and what evidence (appraisals, comparables, photos) the assessor's office will accept before final action.

Multiple residents used the hearing to seek clarity on appeal and relief procedures after receiving large valuation notices. Assessor staff said that if a parcel is subject to active Tax Equalization and Review Commission (TURC) litigation the county frequently cannot adjust the current year's assessment until TURC rules, and recommended taxpayers obtain any written TURC directions and bring them to the assessor's office.
Staff also walked through homestead-exemption timing and documentation. The assessor's office said the filing window is January 3 through June 30 and that office staff can assist taxpayers with forms and income documentation; staff noted the example income threshold discussed at the hearing (approximately $52,000) to illustrate eligibility but told residents to call for parcel-specific guidance.
The office encouraged residents to submit recent appraisals, comparable-sales lists and photographs, and said contract appraisers will re-inspect properties where there is clear evidence of misrecorded condition, quality or square footage. Final action on protested values will occur at the board's scheduled session on Friday after staff completes follow-up inspections and desk reviews.
