Corrections director wins approvals for training contract, equipment repairs and tablet expansion in Hall County jail

The Board of Corrections session included several operational approvals and a policy direction to expand inmate tablet features.
Corrections director (speaker 3) told commissioners the jail population was about 217 (including U.S. Marshals detainees) and outlined several administrative needs. The board approved a renewal of the Relias online training contract for corrections staff; the director said staff negotiated to keep increases from proposed levels and that the contract is budgeted. The clerk announced the Relias renewal passed by recorded vote.
The board also authorized equipment and repair expenses: a motion approved purchase of booster-pump controls from Jerry Sheet Metal for $8,800 (to be paid from the building and land improvement fund) after staff described two quotes and the need to preserve building systems. Commissioners also approved repairs to vehicle sensors and related concrete work from CEI Security and Mid Plains Construction for a total of $6,650, also funded from building and land improvement funds.
On inmate technology, corrections staff and a vendor representative (Alex Moreland of Encartel) summarized the tablet program’s use for inmate management, educational and rehabilitative content, mental-health access, scanned mail, and data tracking. Staff recommended expanding tablets to replace battery-powered inmate radios with iHeartRadio streaming and to enable monitored voice visits on tablets to reduce contraband and provide more controlled access to news and phone features. The board voted to allow the corrections director and assistant director to implement the new features; the motion carried 6–0.
Corrections director also reported ongoing tests of body-worn cameras for jail use and described cloud-storage considerations; the board asked staff to further develop a plan before seeking formal approval.
