York County commissioners discuss budget workshop, truck purchase funding and correct a public hearing advertisement

The Chair told the commission that the budget workshop will incorporate the newly approved numbers and acknowledged that the public hearing had been advertised with the wrong paperwork; he said the county will correct the advertisement and hold the public hearing at the next meeting. "We will start the meeting off with a public hearing for our budget," the Chair said, and added that the meeting sequence will then proceed to the regular commissioner business and the board of equalization if applicable.
The Chair said the county's budget "looks like we were gonna be somewhere around a third of a penny in levy increase," and attributed the relatively small projection in part to favorable interest income.
Commissioners also debated how to pay for a planned truck and trailer. Options discussed included purchasing the equipment from the operating budget as currently set, or removing the purchase from the budget and instead funding it with inheritance tax receipts. The Clerk and other commissioners said they would revisit the decision during the budget process and that one or the other funding method would be used; no final, formal vote or binding directive to use inheritance tax was recorded in the transcript.
Why it matters: the rescheduled public hearing is the formal step that allows public comment on the budget before adoption; decisions about funding the truck affect how much of the operating budget is available for other county needs.
Next steps: staff were directed to correct the public hearing advertisement and publish the corrected notice (the Clerk said Jill would prepare the publication and that the publication would need to run four days ahead of the corrected public hearing). Commissioners agreed to revisit the truck funding decision as part of the budget workshop and adoption process.
