District presents elementary literacy work; administrators cite daily small-group instruction

District presenters described ongoing elementary literacy work and the administration’s PGL (professional growth and learning) efforts at the Dec. 18 board meeting. Presenters said the district began PGL with training for all building administrators before the school year and emphasized literacy instruction practices that are now being implemented across elementary buildings.

An administrator presenting the work said small-group instruction is now happening in classrooms every day and that the district has developed "look-for" documents that break instruction into specific practices teachers can implement. The presenter said those documents and backward design are helping create targeted professional development for teachers and administrators.

“We're seeing that small group instruction is happening in classrooms every day,” the administrator said, adding that teacher surveys show modest increases in confidence with the new practices.

Presenters described PGL as a system-level effort: administrators received training, districts separated instructional practices into smaller parts for coaching and observation, and the system is using survey data to track teacher confidence and improvement. The presenters noted that gains are marginal but measurable in some indicators of classroom practice.

Board and staff also discussed presentation logistics, including switching between podium and computer microphones and testing phantom power before connecting remote presenters. Remote presenters are listed on the agenda under item 7, which covers curriculum, instruction and assessment and textbook adoption.
