The Rockville Science Center told the Feb. 9 mayor and council meeting that it has been displaced from its 36C Maryland Avenue space after the landlord leased to a different tenant, forcing the center to suspend registrations for its largest summer-camp program and leaving hundreds of families uncertain. "For us, in terms of physical space needs to get us through the end of the year, we're looking for about 5,000 square feet. But ... to actually reach our aspirations we are looking towards 20,000 square feet," said the center's president. The center also said it has launched a $1,000,000 fundraising campaign to support relocation and long-term plans.
The center described its role as a longtime community STEM asset and urged the mayor and council to help identify public-private partnerships and relocation options; the mayor noted that Rockville Economic Development, Inc. staff were present and offered to help connect the center with relocation assistance and resources. REDI staff later confirmed they could assist with relocation and networking.
