Board hears Brimley Park outreach plan, urban-forest inventory update and community-event notes

City project staff and the board reviewed several park projects and outreach items at the July 23 meeting.
David de la Cruz, introduced as a new project manager, outlined proposed Brimley Park improvements: an ADA route, an accessible parking stall and a single new playground structure designed for either ages 2–5 or 5–12 (staff said budget and site constraints limit delivering both). He announced an on‑site outreach and feedback session for Brimley Park on July 31 beginning at 5:30 p.m. “We’re…looking at ADA pathway improvements and ADA parking stall and a completely new and refreshed park playground equipment structure,” de la Cruz said.
Staff also reported the city is updating its urban‑forest inventory (the last comprehensive effort was noted as around 2017) and that program design (replacement, maintenance and funding responsibilities) remains under discussion and will likely be part of future budget planning. The board flagged limited staff and funding as constraints and discussed whether management should be centralized or shared among departments.
Staff highlighted summer programming outcomes and outreach: Summerfest drew strong attendance last year (staff estimated about 40,000), weekly Farmers Market attendance and weekend concert programming were described as successful, and the police department’s 20th‑anniversary celebration will be noted at the Farmers Market on Aug. 27.
The meeting closed after the board recommended the Westlake Avenue pilot for street‑end improvements and directed staff to prepare a council report and neighbor outreach plan if council approves.
