Rockville Economic Development, Inc. (REDI) presented a midyear work-session briefing to the mayor and council on Feb. 9, reporting regional job losses tied to federal-contracting changes, local real-estate trends and programs to support business retention and workforce transition. REDI staff said the DC region has lost more than 52,000 jobs since November 2024, Maryland about 25,000 jobs and roughly 9,900 jobs across the broader area that includes Bethesda through Frederick (described in the briefing as the 'Greater Rockville' census area).
"Ready is, the economic development arm of the city," REDI staff said, outlining efforts to help businesses launch and expand and to diversify Rockville's industry base beyond federal contracting. The briefing highlighted a roughly 25% vacancy rate for Rockville's 13 million square feet of office inventory and a 7.7% vacancy rate for about 4.1 million square feet of industrial/flex space, and noted market opportunities for adaptive reuse and incentive-driven leasing. REDI said it conducted about 70 business visits and attracted 32 new businesses in the reporting period.
Programs described included Reboot (a federal-worker bootcamp), Founders Rising (a 20-person cohort, 15 from Montgomery County), Mobilize Montgomery (a regional resource hub) and a new federal workforce career center; REDI staff said partners are tracking placement outcomes and offered to provide more detailed success numbers from WorkSource Montgomery and others. The presentation also covered the biotech corridor branding effort, international outreach and plans for an enhanced biotech corridor website and fundraising. REDI reported it has spent about 39% of its annual budget to date and flagged uncertainty from federal grant pauses that can affect smaller firms.
Council members pressed staff for more granular data on whether job-loss figures represent the city proper or the broader census area and asked REDI to follow up with partner agencies on placement and job-outcome counts. REDI agreed to follow up and noted planned coordination with neighboring jurisdictions and a joint economic-development session with Gaithersburg set for June 29.
