The Glen Rock administration explained to the Board of Education how the district is handling an elementary world‑language staffing gap.
Following an early‑August resignation of an elementary Spanish teacher, administrators said they advertised for multiple world languages (French, Latin, Mandarin, Spanish and American Sign Language) to increase the candidate pool. The superintendent explained the district received several Mandarin‑certified applicants and "found a very strong candidate teacher, who accepted the position." To provide instruction across buildings, leaders outlined a rotation: Spanish will be offered at two elementary schools for half the year and Mandarin at the other two schools, with the groups flipping afterward. The district noted world‑language instruction is one day per week and is oriented toward cultural exposure rather than full‑time language fluency.
Board member Mr. Corey said the arrangement responded to staffing constraints and parental questions about how elementary and secondary language offerings align. The administration stressed the intent is not to remove any language from middle and high school offerings; choices at those levels will continue to depend on enrollment.
Why it matters: The staffing approach preserves elementary exposure to world languages despite shortages, but it also depends on enrollment and available certified teachers; families asked for clarity about continuity to middle school programs.
Next steps: The board accepted the update; administrators will continue recruiting and may adjust based on enrollment and feedback.
