Resident urges Glen Rock board to restore orchestra teacher as strings program grows

At the meeting’s second public‑comment period, resident Yuriko Bertram told the board she has pressed for nine years for a high‑school orchestra position to provide continuity for middle‑school string students.
“Some of the kids are good enough to make Allstate. Think about that. Some of them are best in the state. We have very talented kids and we don't have an orchestra,” Bertram said, recounting that more than 40 students filled the middle‑school concert stage with strings but have no high‑school ensemble to progress into. She said the district is not replacing a retiring teacher and that, without an instructor, chamber groups and an orchestra “will never be able to get there.”
Bertram urged trustees to consider restoring an orchestra teacher position and to recognize the effect staffing decisions have on program continuity. Board members did not make an immediate commitment in response but thanked her for the appeal and noted the district is monitoring staffing and program needs.
The public comment followed earlier board discussion about staffing, curriculum pilots and budgeted construction allowances; several trustees later emphasized the importance of follow‑up and requested data that could inform personnel decisions.
