Dickinson County approves purchase of 10 AEDs, highlights improved safety metrics

The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors voted to purchase 10 new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to bring county facilities up to current standards. A staff member said unit cost is approximately $1,324 each with a $400 refund per unit available through a take-back program, yielding an estimated net outlay of roughly $9,250 for 10 units.
The purchase was requested by the county’s safety team and the new director of the SHIELD safety and health program. The motion to buy 10 AEDs for the courthouse, nature center, road shops and jail was moved and passed by voice vote.
In an update, the county reported a drop in its workers-compensation mod factor from 0.84 last year to 0.63 this year, which staff attributed to improved reporting and training; staff said a lower mod factor reduces insurance costs. The county also announced an upcoming CPR training session in March and a planned fire drill; staff noted the county participates in the SHIELD safety program through Northwest Iowa Planning and Development.
The board’s action was recorded as approved by voice vote; staff will proceed with procurement and apply the trade-in/refund program for old units where available.
