Alpena allocates $6,800 for historic survey and maintenance plan for Little Red Lighthouse

Council approved a parks funding appropriation of $6,800 on Sept. 16 to pay Zapski Associates (Saunders and Szebski) to conduct a historical survey and prepare rehabilitation and maintenance recommendations for the Little Red Lighthouse.
Parks staff and a Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy representative described Little Red as a unique maritime heritage feature in need of preservation. The consulting firm provided a quote of $6,800; staff said funding could be taken from the FY2024‑25 parks budget after reevaluating other park upgrades.
A council member moved to approve using the parks funding for the historical survey; the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said this is an initial, essential step in what could be a longer rehabilitation project and that state Department of Natural Resources/Coastal property access (DPI) will allow the consultant on site in October to carry out the study.
