Washington State Ferries announced key steps to modernize its fleet, releasing initial invitation‑for‑bid volumes and outlining a multi‑year delivery plan for new hybrid‑electric vessels.
"We released volumes 1 and 2 of our invitation to bid to prequalify shipbuilders to build five hybrid electric vessels," Assistant Secretary Steve Nevi said. System Electrification Program Administrator Matt von Rudin said WSF expects to deliver two vessels in 2028, two in 2029 and the final boat in 2030, and hopes to accelerate production by having two shipbuilders construct boats concurrently.
Matt von Rudin also explained why WSF is pursuing hybrid designs rather than restarting a diesel class: important propulsion components for the Olympic‑class are no longer available and creating a new diesel propulsion integration would add roughly two years to delivery. He added that the agency now has statutory flexibility to own designs and seek competition beyond a single in‑state shipyard, an outcome of recent legislative changes.
The panel said hybrid conversions of three jumbo Mark II ferries include critical preservation work. "This contract includes the conversion work... but it also includes critical preservation work," Matt said, noting the conversions reduce local air pollutants and noise and that converted vessels will operate in hybrid mode until terminal charging is available.
WSF said terminal charging infrastructure will lag vessel delivery and that short‑charging capability in 2028 is expected to enable higher battery‑only operation and fuel savings once in place.
