District to expand competency‑based instruction; board approves science textbook adoption

Alyssa Cox, director of secondary programs, provided the board with a detailed update on the district’s competency‑based education work during the 2023–24 school year and plans for 2024–25.
Cox said classroom pilots at Floyd D Technology Center moved from four pilot teachers to full staff implementation and that the district opened a second Proficiency Lab at York Comprehensive to allow flexible online course options. She described phase‑two work to expand competency practices to additional schools (Hunter Street, Jefferson and York 01 Academy), plans for student‑centered learning fellows and development of competency‑based attendance procedures for grades 9–12 that staff aim to finalize in late July for presentation in August.
Cox also asked the board to approve secondary science instructional materials so staff could place preorders in July and ensure materials arrive for fall. She said the Office of Instructional Materials recently notified the district that those science materials would be funded for 2024–25; on a motion by Ms. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Rose, the board approved the instructional materials adoption.
Cox outlined next steps: continuing coaching and professional learning, expanding school‑level implementation, and returning to the board with finalized attendance procedure details in August.
