Assistant Director of Benefits and Risk Management Michael Stiers explained the role of a TPA in handling first reports of injury, filings with the state and, where necessary, legal representation before state workers' compensation hearings. Staff said two vendors responded to the RFP, both scored competitively, and recommended CAS Claims Administration for services not to exceed $60,000 annually. Trustees asked about cost structure, and staff explained that initial medical claim fees, indemnity claim fees and attorney costs vary by stage; trial-level or attorney fees would incur additional costs beyond the per-claim prices.
A motion to approve the recommended TPA was moved and seconded; the board approved the contract by voice vote (ayes recorded). Staff said the arrangement helps ensure timely state reporting and efficient claims handling.
