The Bryan Independent School District board on Tuesday approved its consent agenda unanimously and confirmed two principal hires after a meeting that primarily showcased student and staff recognitions.
At the start of the meeting, board members and administrators highlighted a series of student accomplishments across fine arts, athletics, career and technical education, and academic competitions. James Mosqueda, the mariachi director at Bridal High School, thanked the board for support after his Mariachi group advanced to the UIL state festival for the ninth consecutive year. “Without your support for our students and programs, we could not do what we do,” Mosqueda said.
Social studies coordinator Lisa Mouton recognized Texas History Day winners who qualified for nationals, and multiple CTE advisors and students were introduced for state and national qualifications in robotics, TSA, esports and SkillsUSA. Sarah Braden, executive director of the Bryan ISD Education Foundation, announced $260,000 in scholarships: two $20,000 paraprofessional scholarships and 62 alternative certification scholarships (top four recipients receive $5,000; 58 recipients $3,450 each).
Later in the meeting the board moved through routine business. The consent agenda was presented and approved after a motion and second; the chair announced unanimous approval. After a closed session, trustees reconvened to consider personnel recommendations from the superintendent and approved hiring Rebecca Luna as principal of Stephen F. Austin Middle School and Tara Hunter as principal of Navarro Elementary School. Trustee Gonzales moved to approve the superintendent’s recommendation for Rebecca Luna; the motion was seconded by Trustee Bedford and passed unanimously. The same motion process and unanimous result followed for Tara Hunter’s appointment.
No contentious items or public controversies arose during the open meeting; the board adjourned at 9:03 p.m.
